Choose your words to not minimize accomplishments

Brevity they say is a virtue but sometimes it is tantamount to placing hurdles on the road to building your image. Most women have a greater tendency to give short vague answers that usually underplay their roles and minimize their accomplishments while defining what they do.

While blowing your own trumpet is not what is being suggested since it is flashy and unmannerly, trying to underplay your role, especially at work, is like cutting the branch you are sitting on.

When women try to be brief about what they do they often qualify their statements with phrases like ‘just,’ ‘only,’ or ‘kind of’. This also sends a negative message. At the same time statements like these lower self esteem and also self confidence. Satisfaction and pride with regards to what you so is primary to success.

When you really come to think of it, a post is created in an organization only because it is necessary. Even though a junior executive is not as important as the CEO is, he still plays an important part in the functioning of the organization and its roles. The organization has specific roles because each and role is important in the overall functioning of the company. That is what you should believe for your own role as well.

There are some things that you need to keep in mind when you speak about what you do in an organization or the tasks that you perform. When someone asks you what you do, make it as short as you want to but make sure that it details out what you do with the importance that it deserves. Explain your responsibilities, the nature of your work and designation. Try it and you will find that it is not that difficult to be brief and yet send out a message that you are proud of what you do. Saying it is important because only if you say it will you believe in it yourself. And it is your belief that instills confidence and enhances your image.

The underlying idea is not to lie about your stature in the organization but to present it in a manner that brings out the importance. It should also be said in a manner that helps you create a positive image for you among others. It should also be said in a brief manner without leaving out the essential details. Conveying the position and responsibility in a subtle manner is also an art you will need to learn and practice. Include the problems that you and tackle and the impact that it has in the overall profit of the organization. It should be short enough that it can be told in a short elevator ride as well as detailed enough to ensure that the other person takes an impression that you are important and proud of what you do in the organization.
